Artist in Residence Farewell & Open Studio with L. Kasimu Harris
December 8 @ 2:00 pm - 4:00 pm
Join us in saying goodbye to our Fall 2024 Artist in Residence,
L. Kasimu Harris!
L. Kasimu Harris is a visual communicator whose work is deeply rooted in the principles of print journalism. With a commitment to truth at the heart of all his storytelling, he uses art as a powerful medium to explore and highlight narratives that often go untold in traditional media.
In this special studio visit, you’ll get to see L. Kasimu Harris’ most recent work. You’ll also get to hear about all the exciting projects he’s been a part of during the past few months. L. Kasimu is currently a part of New Orlean’s Prospect.6: The Future Is Present, The Harbinger Is Home, where he’ll be exhibiting work from his series Vanishing Black Bars & Lounges (2018-present). The exhibition will be open to the public on November 2nd and will run through February 2025. L. Kasimu Harris will also be a part MoMA’s New Photography 2025: Lines of Belonging, the 40th anniversary edition of The Museum of Modern Art’s celebrated New Photography series. The show will open September 14, 2025.
Vanishing Black Bars & Lounges shines a light on the significance of Black cultural spaces in New Orleans and beyond. These bars and lounges serve as the heartbeat of the community, hosting social aid and pleasure clubs, Black Masking Indians, and gatherings that have been vital since the late 1800s.
L. Kasimu describes his work as “a constant striving to amplify fundamental inequities and injustices of Black people, as well as illuminating the Black pool of genius from the same disenfranchised community.”
