SURREALISM AS TACTIC: A BLACK FILM FESTIVAL

Black Experimental Film Screening & Community Workshop with Rainbow Serpent

On February 24, 2026 from 6:00 PM – 8:00 PM, the University of Pittsburgh’s Center for African American Poetry & Poetics (CAAPP) and Rainbow Serpent are partnering to host the Black Experimental Filmmaking Community Workshop at ALMA | LEWIS. The workshop is part of CAAPP’s Spring 2026 Black Study Surrealism as Tactic: A Black Film Festival. The evening will consist of discussion surrounding the process of audiovisual filmmaking, afrofuturism, surrealism, as well as a screening of the film Blackstar Sanctuary.
This workshop will feature a film screening, interactive craft discussion, and generative session about audiovisual filmmaking, collective study, ritual, and why Black surrealism/experimental modes/African spiritual cosmologies and aesthetics are methods of urgent artistic response in our contemporary moment. Come learn and hear from the co-founders of Rainbow Serpent. Black filmmakers, community filmmakers, and those interested in Black experimental art are encouraged to RSVP for a seat in this limited-capacity event.
