“Meditations from the Woodshed” lecture with Alma|Lewis Fellow, Tyler Shine

April 20, 2023 @ 6:00 pm - 7:30 pm

Free

Join us for a lecture with Alma|Lewis Fellow, Tyler Shine. Tyler will share some of his current research for his dissertation, “There Is No End to Out: Ecological Art in the Black Diaspora,” which explores the intersections of modernism, environmental history, and ecology through the work and careers of Jacob Lawrence, Alma Thomas, Martin Puryear, and Ellen Gallagher.

The title for this talk is borrowed from artist Jack Whitten’s work journal “Notes from the Woodshed.” Derived from jazz, to go to the woodshed or to woodshed means to practice and experiment in a private space before a work enters the public sphere.

Alma Thomas, Iris, Tulips, Jonquils, and Crocuses, 1969, Acrylic on canvas, 60 x 50 in. National Museum of Women in the Arts
