The main figure represents a marginalized US citizen making sense of the cognitive dissonance that occurs when Democracy is used to pacify the ills of Capitalism. 

I use myself as a representation of the conquered and conqueror because of my ancestral connections to both Indigenous peoples and colonizers.

In this portrait, a partly photographed and drawn/collaged version of an “American Citizen” has been printed onto a polyester fabric and sewn to osnaburg, a fabric commonly used to clothe enslaved people in the 18th and 19th centuries.

The QR codes connect viewers to primary resources, such as the Smithsonian Institution, the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture, and the Library of Congress.

The purpose of this artwork is to introduce equitable insight and discussion for an impartial evaluation of United States history and the effects that history has on its current identity and citizenship.
